A clinical study was performed to investigate the therapeutic effect of CBD ointment administered to severe skin disorders. This 2019 retrospective study of 20 patients was published in Clinica Terapeutica. The study included patients with non-inflammatory (cutaneous blemishes, acne scars) and inflammatory (atopic dermatitis, psoriasis) skin issues.
Patients included in this treatment were suffering from moderate to severe skin disorders for at least 6 months. The subjects were instructed to administer topical CBD ointment twice daily for three months. During the treatment period no other skin products were utilized. Skin assessments and photographs were done at day 0 (baseline), day 30, day 60 and day 90.
The results showed both a subjective improvement and an objective photographic improvement of the skin disorders. The quality of life was demonstrated by improved severity of itch and no worsening of sleep patterns. There were no irritant or adverse effects documented during the treatment.
This study was a small clinical cohort. However, this investigation demonstrated topical CBD as an another therapeutic option for non-inflammatory skin issues. CBD topical treatment also showed the therapeutic potential by its inhibition of keratinocyte proliferation as another potential use of CBD topical ointments for inflammatory skin disorders.
