Medicinal cannabinoids have been suggested to have a therapeutic role in certain mental disorders. The Lancet Psychiatry published a 2019 systemic meta-analysis review which evaluated the available evidence to ascertain the effectiveness and safety of all types of medicinal cannabinoids in treating symptoms of various mental disorders.
From the findings of this study, which of the following conditions demonstrated cannabinoids as an effective treatment option with improvement of symptoms?
D. ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
The Lancet Psychiatry study examined all studies from 1980 until 2018 with medicinal cannabinoid treatment in adults (≥18 years) for treating depression, anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, or psychosis, either as the primary condition or secondary to other medical conditions. 83 studies were eligible.
Of all the conditions reviewed, cannabinoids improved anxiety among individuals with other medical conditions such as chronic pain and multiple sclerosis. The evidence was illustrated in improvement of anxiety symptoms. The judgement of this article stated:
1- The need for proper close guidance on the use of cannabinoids for treating mental disorders within a regulatory framework is recommended.
2- Further high-quality studies directly examining the effect of cannabinoids on treating mental disorders are necessary.
The results from another clinical report showed evidence of improvement of anxiety with CBD use. This 2019 journal article was published in Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series in The Permanente Journal which reported evidence that CBD helps improve sleep and/or anxiety in a clinical population. This large retrospective clinical case series evaluated CBD therapy with adult patients with documented anxiety or sleep disorder diagnosis. Follow up evaluation was done monthly with CBD dose between 25mg to 75mg daily. Anxiety and sleep improved (79.2% and 66.7%, respectively) for most patients, and these improvements were sustained over time. The sustained CBD effect were shown to be maintained better with patients with anxiety than for sleep from the results of subsequent monthly clinical evaluations.
The BAK 2 Basics CBD Medical Consultants offer close guidance and follow up with its patients for safe medical CBD use. Our recommendations for anxiety is to start CBD at a low dose of 15-20mg and to use an oil for acute anxiety symptoms. The oil is best intake in this situation since the effect will be quick within 5-10 minutes and can be repeated in 10-15 minutes if necessary. Oils act quickly and are easier to guide the effect as compared to capsules and edibles.
